ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

At a time when digital images can reproduce the visible world with remarkable ease, Ji advocates for the enduring and irreplaceable value of painting directly from life. Over the past year, he has travelled extensively throughout Vancouver and the surrounding region, capturing coastlines, forests, parks, city streets, and mountain views.

Painting outdoors and on location, Ji responds directly to the conditions of each moment. Every brushstroke reflects an experience that cannot be repeated.

“Plein air painting is a dialogue with time,” says Ji. “Each work is created on location and shaped by changing weather, shifting light, and the fleeting rhythm of the day. For me, it is not simply an act of copying nature, but a continual process of observation and understanding.”

Ji’s paintings seek to convey more than visual accuracy. They preserve the atmosphere, temperature, and emotion of a particular time and place. As sunlight moves across a façade and shadows drift beneath the trees, his canvases capture the quiet presence of Vancouver’s bays, bridges, churches, harbours, and cherry blossoms—not merely as scenery, but as lived experiences.
